Generally speaking, CBD remains in a person’s system for up to 5 days. However, this duration varies and for some, it can remain for more than a week.

A number of factors determine how long CBD is detectable in your system.

  • The Amount Consumed – As is the case with many other substances, the higher the dose consumed, the longer it stays in your system.

  • Frequency of Consumption – How often CBD is consumed also plays a part in determining how long CBD stays in your system. When used regularly, CBD builds up within the body over time. Hence, it is advisable to first use CBD for about a week to check tolerance levels.

When used occasionally, your system can clear itself of CBD pretty fast.

  • Body-Related Factors – Given that everyone’s body is different, CBD, and other substances, affect people uniquely. A person’s body mass index (BMI), metabolic rate, water content, etc are just a few of the many aspects of the body that affect how long CBD stays in the system.

  • Food Consumption – The amount of food consumed, the time when eaten, and what kind of food is consumed is also an influencing factor. When taken on an empty stomach, CBD is metabolized and removed from the body faster as compared to after a meal.

  • How it is Used – As you would probably know, CBD can be consumed in a variety of ways. The method with which CBD is consumed plays a part in its onset, strength, and duration of effects and how long it is detectable in the human body.

When using smokable CBD, the effects can be felt almost immediately as the chemical enters the lungs directly. When smoked, CBD also leaves the body quickly. At the same time, when CBD is used as an oil and placed under the tongue, via a dropper, it is absorbed quickly and is detectable for a longer duration.

In contrast, edible CBD, in the form of gummies or similar, takes time for effects to be noticeable and also takes longer to leave the system. The case is similar to other forms of CBD like creams and topicals.

How Long Does it Take to Notice the Effects of CBD?

The time it takes for CBD to have a noticeable effect depends on many of the same factors that influence how long it stays in the body.

The kind of CBD used, the amount, the user’s body composition, etc all play a part. Therefore, it is tough to predict the speed at which CBD will begin to affect an individual.

Generally speaking, when CBD is smoked or applied under the tongue, effects are noticeable in about 15 minutes. In contrast, edibles and creams can take up to an hour to have an effect.

How Long Do The Effects of CBD Last?

Once again, the answer to this question is dependant on a number of factors including your body composition, the amount and method of CBD intake, etc. However, generally speaking, the effects of CBD can last anywhere between 2 and 6 hours.

Will a Drug Test Detect CBD?

CBD should not show up on your drug test. However, if the CBD consumed also contains THC, chances are that it will. THC is the active ingredient in marijuana and is responsible for the ‘high’ sought by marijuana users.

A number of CBD products contain a certain amount of THC. The result of your drug test depends on the amount of THC within your CBD product.

The points below should provide a quick guide on the CBD products you can choose while keeping an eye on your THC intake –

  • Full-spectrum CBD – Full spectrum CBD comes with all of the naturally occurring chemicals found within the plant, including THC.

  • Broad-spectrum CBD – Fairly similar to full-spectrum CBD, however, the final product goes through a final process to eliminate traces of THC.

  • CBD Isolate – Pure CBD.

Quick Tip – When choosing ‘Full Spectrum CBD’ – you may want to opt for CBD derived from hemp. In contrast to marijuana-derived CBD, hemp-based CBD is legally required to have less than 0.3% of THC.

And if You’re Breastfeeding?

The consumption of CBD while breastfeeding is definitely not recommended. It is advisable to discontinue the use of CBD at least 7 days before you plan to start breastfeeding.

According to an FDA published in October 2019, the consumption of CBD during breastfeeding is strongly discouraged due to the lack of conclusive studies on the effect of CBD on babies. That said, research has proven that the effects of CBD are transferred to breastfeeding babies through mother’s milk.

There is a possibility that certain CBD products may contain THC and other chemicals that can prove harmful to babies especially when at the breastfeeding stage. While research is ongoing and medical experts are striving to know more, it may be advisable to avoid the consumption of CBD if pregnant or breastfeeding.

CBD products can also contain THC and other substances that can pose risks to a breastfed baby. Research is ongoing, but until experts know more, it’s best to avoid using CBD while pregnant or breastfeeding.
